These days, I see a lot of web "designers" who have created a handful of cookie-cutter-generic layouts that they're offering for sale. These layouts sometimes look very nice, but ultimately, they tend to blend in with the thousands of existing sites that have been created the same way.
A website should definitely look nice. But more importantly, a website should be unique and reflect something about the business or person it belongs to.
I believe that I can give you both, though I'll let my work speak for itself. In addition to this site (of course), I've done some work on a few other sites out there (click the images to go to the actual sites!):
Perhaps my work is not up to par with the professional sites, but I think it is at least better than average! : )
Also note that nearly all graphical work for those sites is my own. The only notable exceptions are the logos that were given to me to build the projects around (The Girls night Out ribbon logo, the Curves corporate logo, and the Cancer Services sunrise logo) and the photographs (obviously).
So far, my skills only include HTML and beginner CSS. I don't have any immediate plans to study anything higher (CGI, PHP, Java, Perl, XHTML, AJAX, Ruby, etc.), but if a project comes along that requires one of them, I'm willing to learn (but obviously, this will take some more time to get the project going)!
